DATEV's History

On this page, we would like to lead you through our cooperative's successful history of five decades.

February 14, 1966: DATEV Founded

  • 65 tax consultants from Nuremberg's regional chamber establish a cooperative self-help organization.
  • Their aim is to facilitate bookkeeping tasks with the assistance of EDP.
  • The founding members of DATEV are (from left to right): Edmund Rudolph, Horst Preißner, Joachim Mattheus, Heinz Sebiger, and Klaus Hartmann.

January 1969: DATEV Computer Center

  • For three years, the member's accounting data - which were recorded previously on punch tape - were processed at an external data center.
  • The strong increase in the number of members made it economically feasible to set up an own data center. It was inaugurated on 31 January 1969 through the Federal Minister of Finance, Mr. Franz Josef Strauß.

September 1974: Remote Data Transmission

  • Introducing remote data transmission, DATEV allows its members to transmit data from their terminals which was recorded on magnetic tape, and send it to the DATEV data center in Nuremberg via telephone lines.
  • The speed of EDP can now be used optimally for sending time-sensitive data. However, remote data transmission does not fully replace the physical disc shipment immediately.

June 1976: Electronic Data Transfer Network

  • Ten years after its establishment, DATEV develops and sets up its own network for electronic data transmission between tax consultants' offices and the DATEV data center.
  • Fixed landlines span a network of nationwide distributed nodes (so-called head-ends) to Nuremberg which make data transfer for DATEV members faster and more cost-effective.
  • DATEV's network has 41 head.ends at the time of its greatest extent.
  • Due to technological advancement and development, the carrier network is dismantled in 2002 since it is not economically lucrative anymore for DATEV and its members.

September 1982: Cooperation Agreement with TKC

  • On 8 September 1982, the Japanese company TKC (Tochigiken-Keisan-Center) and DATEV document the alliance of the two companies, which began in 1972, in a cooperation agreement. Both data processing service organizations aim to support tax consultants with electronic data processing.
  • To this day, TKC and DATEV are linked through a cultural and business exchange program.

June 1990: DATEV in the New Federal States

  • Since the economic system of the former East Germany had no demand for tax consulting, there was a huge need to reconstruct the profession.
  • Therefore, in August and September 1990, a DATEV-team went on a roadshow with tents through eight cities giving seminars and drawing 10,000 participants.
  • DATEV establishes its first Information Center in the new German federal states: Dresden (1990), Schwerin (1990), Leipzig (1991), Magdeburg and Erfurt (1992).

June 1996: Transition in the Office of Chairman of the Board

  • DATEV's founder and chairman of the executive board, Dr. Heinz Sebiger, retires at the age of 73 after successfully administrating the cooperative's affairs for 30 years.
  • Up to 1996, DATEV had developed into a business with an annual turnover of almost 1 billion DM, had 35,000 members, and 4,700 employees.
  • His successor as of July 1996 is Prof. Dieter Kempf.

1999: Conversion to the Windows Product Line

  • From 1997 to 1999, a gradual conversion of the DATEV programs and the member's consultancies took place from the DOS system to the 32 bit operating system Windows.
  • At the end of 1999, the transition is almost accomplished. It is the biggest challenge since the program new conception in 1973, which went down in DATEV's history as "Redesign".
  • The Windows conversion cost 324 million DM.

September 2000: New Markets within the European Union

  • Together with the Czech Chamber of Tax consultants, DATEV establishes the cooperative "KDP-DATEV, družstvo" in September 2000.
  • In December. DATEV joins forces with business founders in Brno to form the marketing company DATEV.cz s.r.o.
  • With this step, DATEV completes its first establishment in the European market. The goal is to support the tax profession in the Czech Republic as well as German tax consultants with local clients through programs and services.
  • In the following years, additional European affiliates will be established in Poland, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Spain, and Slovakia.

2001: Market Expansions to Austria and Italy

  • 2001 sees the foundation of new affiliates in Europe:
  • The marketing company in Vienna, Austria, which operates under the name of DATEV.at GmbH.
  • Establishment of the company D&K s.r.l. in Italy.

January 2002: Euro Conversion

  • In the beginning of 2002, the introduction of the new currency euro brings a huge wave of conversion for DATEV: calculation of payments as well as outstanding debts and the quotation of amounts are made in euros only.
  • Although the currency change-over has been prepared since late 1996, and the member's of the cooperative were supported with a variety of information and measures, only 2.3% of members and their clients booking in the DATEV data center had reorganised their accounting to euros by the end of 2001.
  • Therefore, on peak days in January 2002, up to 80,000 clients per day had to be converted in the field of payroll accounting. By the end of January, the change-over to the euro was completed by 96% of the companies.

2003: Market Expansion in Poland

  • Foundation of DATEV Symfonia Sp. z o.o. in Poland as a joint venture with the Polish software manufacturer Matrix.pl S.A.
  • DATEV.pl Sp. z o.o. offers software solutions for Polish tax consultants and auditors, and is based in Warsaw with branch offices in Katowice and Poznan as well as a nation-wide dealer network.

July 2005: Extending the Involvement in Italy

  • DATEV extends its involvement in Italy by founding the development company DATEV.it S.p.A.

2007: Joint Venture with SINFOPAC S.L.

  • With this joint venture, DATEV extends its European activities to the Spanish market.

2010: Expansion of DATEV's Commitment in Poland

  • DATEV becomes sole proprietor of the Polish associated company, which is re-titled as DATEV.pl

April 2011: Enlargement of the DATEV Computer Center

The new DATEV data center is put into service, now comprising a total of 4,500 square meters.
  • With the extension of its data center, DATEV fulfills the growing demand of data center-based services such as cloud computing and application service providing (ASP), IT security and data storage solutions, and IT sourcing.

April 2013: Groundbreaking of DATEV IT-Campus 111

  • DATEV is currently building a software development center in Nuremberg.
  • The new building offers space for about 1,800 office workplaces. The building is scheduled to open in 2015.

April 2015: moving into DATEV IT-Campus 111

  • DATEV’s IT-Campus 111 was officially opened in Nuremberg on 17 April 2015. The building is situated in a historical neighborhood, opposite to the Law Courts where the Nuremberg Trials took place in 1945 and 1946.
  • Until recently, the development departments were found in various buildings scattered throughout Nuremberg. IT-Campus 111 unites development under one roof and offers office space for about 1,800 employees.

February 2016: DATEV Turns 50

  • February 1966 marked the beginning of a success story, that isn't finished yet - even after 50 years. Emotional insights into the company and visionary forecasts into the future - this is our film celebrating DATEV's 50th anniversary (in English) and here you can watch the film in German.

2018: DATEV Ecosystem


The cooperative DATEV Ecosystem is part of the business world's digital transformation. It connects DATEV software solutions, technological platforms such as eGovernment, and business software. The focus is on the digital consultancy office as central partner, key player, and service provider. For a better exchange of information and data.

April 2019: Project Fit for Future and Restructured Executive Board

This restructuring project focuses on a new form of collaboration. Products will be developed in workstreams. The idea is to involve DATEV customers closer and prosper through implementation speed.

With this project the executive board was restructured: Chief executive officer Dr. Rrobert Mayr (CEO) focuses on management control and DATEV's global strategy. Diana Windmeißer as chief financial officer (CFO) is responsible for DATEV's overall economic efficiency. CTO Prof. Dr. Peter Krug as chief technology officer is in charge of all development and operation as well as printing and shipping sections. Chief markets officer (CMO) Eckhard Schwarzer takes care of DATEV's service and sales strategy. Julia Bangerth as chief operating officer (COO) is responsible for DATEV's product and solution portfolio.

December 2020: DATEV to Become Day 1 Member of GAIA-X AISBL

DATEV eG participates actively in the GAIA-X project and will become day 1 member of the GAIA-X AISBL association. In the founding stage it will consolidate and facilitate the initiative’s activities. It considers both GAIA-X’s objectives as well as a joint European participation and cooperation with many renowned partners to be important elements for Europe’s digital future.
