DATEV eG’s Preliminary Business Figures 2020*

IT service provider managed Covid-19 year successfully and increased its turnover by 5.1 percent to 1.156 billion euros.

In 2020, being shaped by the coronavirus epidemic, DATEV’s business developed positively. Turnover increased by 5.1 percent to 1.156 billion euros. In absolute figures this is an increase of 55.8 million euros.

Nearly all business areas contributed to this growth. Increasing digitalization of business processes and mobile work made cloud-based solutions and services the strongest booster: Across all product sections turnover regarding these offers increased by 19.8 percent compared to the previous year. Besides cloud applications like DATV Unternehmen online and DATEV Arbeitnehmer online they comprise mainly computer center services in the areas of accounting, taxes, and wages and include services such as audit-proof archiving and secure date transmitting, for example to fiscal authorities.

The number of Unternehmen online users (an application for digital cooperation between tax consultancy and company) was 270,000 at balance date – an increase of more than 60,000 compared to the previous year. The amount of enterprises exchanging documents digitally with their tax consultant via this application increased by another 170,000 to 615,000.

“We Need Digital Progress to Come out of the Coronavirus Crisis Stronger”

“Especially with our cloud-based solutions and services we were able to help our members and their clients in the best possible way to manage the year shaped by the coronavirus epidemic,” says DATEV CEO Dr. Robert Mayr. “2020 once again showed the importance of digitalizing business processes – and that we all need digital progress to come out of the current crisis stronger”.

Of all product sections accounting once again showed the highest absolute growth with an increase of 28.9 million Euros (8.1 percent), thus generating the key contribution to the overall growth. It created a turnover of 386.3 million euros.

The setback in economic activity due to the coronavirus crisis affected the personnel management section: While the amount of payslips generated with DATEV software grew during the first months of the year, it declined after the first lockdown. Over the whole year 157 million wages were processed with DATEV software, three million less than in 2019.

The pandemic-caused restrictions had the strongest impact on the consulting and training section: Most classroom seminars and on-site consulting services were cancelled. Turnover in this section decreased by 18 percent compared to the previous year. Quick changeover to online versions managed to counteract an even stronger decline.

55,500 New Customers Attracted

Particularly pleasing is the development of the number of customers: DATEV could acquire 55,000 new customers, the total being 405,500 by 31 December 2020. At year end 2020, DATEV had 8,125 employees, net 198 more than in the year before. Especially in the areas of product development and service the IT service provider expanded its workforce. Cross-functional teams increased allowing the whole cooperative to react fast to market changes.

The operating result 2020 came to 71.6 million euros, thus being 11 million more than in the business year 2019. The cooperative’s members – tax consultants, auditors, and lawyers – were refunded 47.1 million euros (45.4 million previous year) from the cooperative. The refund rate of 5.0 percent of the refundable annual turnover remains on last year’s level. It will be refunded following the approval of the annual accounts by the representatives’ meeting on 25 June 2021.

*) These are preliminary business figures because the annual accounts are under reserve of the cooperative auditor’s review and will be presented to the representatives’ meeting for approval.
